Chiranjeevi launches new party 'Praja Rajyam'

Vowing to weed out corruption and bring about a clean and effective political movement, Telugu superstar-turned-politician Chiranjeevi today launched his new political party in filmi style before a sea of humanity in this temple town and named it 'Praja Rajyam' .

Chiranjeevi thus became the second matinee idol to plunge into politics from the Telugu film industry after former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N T Rama Rao, who had launched Telugu Desam in January 1983 and swept to power in record nine-month time.

The megastar had formally announced his entry into politics at a press conference in Hyderabad in his party office last week.

Chiranjeevi launched his party amid a stampede and stray unruly scenes at the historical Avilala Tank bed which has witnessed the all India Congress session where the country was put on the reforms path more than 16 years ago.

The actor unveiled through a physically challenged fan the Sun-enblazoned white-green party flag promising clean and good governance amid bursting of crackers and a pledge to provide opportunities to poor agriculturists, laboures, women and the youth.

With the launch of his new party in the political firmament of Andhra Pradesh, the actor chose to start off with sensitive issues of Telangana, classification of Dalits and the Naxalite problem and barely touching upon major human development and social issues without detailing them with specific plans which are dogging the Rajasekhara Reddy's government and the TDP predecessor N Chandrababu Naidu.

Even as the actor conceded that there was a deep sentiment running among the people of Telangana, the youth will review with experts and would make a scientific assessment of the SC categorisation issue.

The Naxalite problem, he said, is related to poverty and would need a thorough re-assessement for a solution.

True to his political audience, the actor, dressed in his signature forearm-rolled white shirt and deep brown trousers, said he was committed to the unity of backward classes, especially the youth who would be provided gainful employement.

Brushing aside criticism by his political rivals of his inexperience, Chiranjeevi said he chose to ignore them and reply them with more service to the people, for which his new party will be committed.

Justifying the launch of the new party, he said the political platform was started to accentuate social service for the past 25 years. ''A political party is for service and not for power,'' he said and the party flag was the replica of the efforts for service like the blazing Sun which was an emblem to serve the people round the clock. The large portion of white background of the flage was for a clean public image and the ribboned green beneath was for its party commitment to the environment and the farming sector.

Saying the party would be democratic, he scoffed at rivals' criticism that it was the party of the family and exhibited his talent to ask the large gathering to suggest the name of the 'new party as the party by you'.

The actor ambled on the makeshift dais on the tank bed with the backdrop of huge LCD screen, gathered opinion and named the party at 1820 hrs digitally and hoisted the flag 40 minutes later with grand show on the screen. EDS: pick up suitably from earlier series

Chiru PRAJA RAJYAM Party

Parting slogan
Mana Rajyam Surajyam. Swarajyam. Prajala Rajyam. Praja Rajyam!! Jai Hind!!!!

7:20 pm
All are soldiers in our party including me
All are soldiers in the war against social problems. There are no leaders in our party. All are soldiers including us. We don’t have selfishness and we don’t have fear. Hence we will win. Let us work hard to build a beautiful future. We want change. We will eliminate the poverty and bring smile among all the people of AP. Bravery and honesty are our weapons. Do not bother about people who sling mud on us. Let them discourage us. The more they discourage, the great our determination we will be.

People penned my role
Lot of writers penned many roles for me in the past for films. This new role is written by you people. And this role is going to be the one which I will live my lifetime. My life is dedicated to you people. Thank you very much. Jai Hind.

7:15 pm
The party anthem being played
After explaining about the party flag, Chiranjeevi played the anthem of Praja Rajyam party. It is accompanied by the cool visuals that support the agenda of Chiranjeevi and the concept of various ingredients embedded in the party flag.

7:10 pm
Flag is inspired by nature
Sun rise is our symbol. There are 24 rays to the sun in the flag which denotes that we spread the energy and light of sun throughout 24 hours. Red color of sun is symbol of change. White background is the mixture of vibgyor which represents people from all castes. The green streak indicates farmers. The yellow line around sun represents the smile that we will bring on the faces of every citizen. Red, White and Green represent Hindu, Christian and Muslims. Hence we are equally good for all the religions.

7 pm
The symbol is Sun
Just now the flag of Chiranjeevi Party is hoisted. The symbol is sun colored in red. The background color of flag is white. There is a streak of green symbolizing the farmers. The image of flag is something like this. There are some rays of sun in this flag. .

6:57 pm
I am for the sentiment of Telangana
Telanga has lot of cultural and historical heritage. It has natural resources and a great history. People have opinion that injustice is done to Telangana. That is because of the biased nature of the earlier governments. Telangana has ‘athma gourava samasya’. I will respect the sentiment. If we have to separate Andhra from Telangana, I am willing to cooperate.

6:55 pm
Justice to economically backward class
All the castes have people who are economically backward. There is no caste to the poor. We will recognize such people as EBC (economically backward class) and my party will support them.

6:50 pm
I am against Government selling lands
Selling lands like doing injustice to our future generations. I am completely against. Government is misusing farmer lands by grabbing from them and giving it to SEZ. I am against giving farming land to SEZ. But I am not against globalization. I want industries to come to AP. But I will give them only those lands that are not used for farming.

6:47 pm
Naxalism is a social problem
Naxalism is erupted from poor. Poor is the deep cause of youth becoming naxals. I am not looking at naxalism as a law and order issue. I look at it as social problem. I would scientifically look at the problem and debate it with intellectuals and come up with a solution.

6:45 pm
Discourage selling of alcohol
Alcohol destroys several homes in AP. The government is giving them money with schemes and taking money from them by selling liquor at the same time. We will make strong commitment towards discouraging selling of liquor.

6:40 pm
Organized corruption should go
People generally take bribes to do things that are illegal and illegitimate. But here in India, most of the officers take bribes to do their duty. I want to cleanse corruption from the top level starting from political system. Hunger, necessity and greediness are three things that drive corruption. One can cure people who are corrupt because of hunger and necessity. But we should eliminate people who do corruption because of greediness.

6:35 pm
There are people who cant get Rs.2 kg rice and who can’s afford Rs. 25 per kg
There are people who are above the social condition of availing 2/- per kg rice and who also can’t afford 25/- for a kg of rice. There are many labors and lower middle class people who are in this segment. I would bring justice to them.

6:30 pm
Farmers get top priority
Chiranjeevi spelt out Sri Sri’s poem “Kammali kolimi, Kummari chakram..” first and explained it. The farmer bachelors are not getting married because of their profession. Farmers will get the top priority.

Education is second priority
Only wealthy people are getting in to good educational institutes. Education has become business, but not the service. The economically backward people do not have money for the higher education.

Health is third priority
Poor pregnant women are giving birth to baby in the verandah of Gandhi hospital because hospital did not have bed. It is such a pathetic situation in general hospitals. Most of the people can’t office corporate hospital. The hospitals are in bad shape in villages.

6:20 pm
Party name is Praja Rajyam
People belonging to various sections of society jointly announced the name of the part in the presence of Chiranjeevi. And the party name is "Praja Rajyam". Tagline of the party is “Preme Lakshyam – Seve Margam”

We have great resources in India
I am impressed by the development and infrastructure in west countries. But we have tremendous natural and human resources. We work hard in India. But we d not have enough guidance and implementing capabilities at the organizational level. I am confident that people Andhra will help me to get me the opportunity to guide and implement the human and natural resources of us in a better way.

6:10 pm
Social justice is the party motto
The motto of our party is to have social justice. Some part of society is getting ample opportunity. Most part of the society is getting very little opportunity. My party motto is to balance the social imbalance.

6:07 pm
I represented lower strata of society
I acted as Dalit youth in my debut film Pranam Khareedu. I acted as cobbler in award winning Swayam Krushi. I did the role of Dalit IAS officer in Kondaveeti Donga. I represented Dalits in Rudraveena. I always associated with lower strata of the society because of the struggles I had gone through.

6:05 pm
I had single meal a day in beginning days of career
In my beginning days of my career I used to have single meal every day as I could not afford food for twice everyday. I need 300 rupees per month as expenses during my stay at Chennai. But I asked my parents to send only 150 rupees. I used to have meals only once and used to have water and tea during the remaining part of the day.

6:00 pm
I wore knickers in intermediate
I studied my intermediate in Sharma college of Ongole. As we could not afford pants, I had to wear knickers even in my intermediate. I had to cooperate with parents and wear knickers though I was embarrassed.

5:55 pm
I remember struggling days as kid
I was the elder son in a family of lower middle class family. I used remember the days when I had to get the groceries home by walk as we did not have enough money to travel in a rickshaw. There were times when we did not have money and we used to pool the change so that we could live for the next two days using that change.

Chiranjeevi blockbuster hits Andhra politics

Tirupati: Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi launched his political party Prajarajyam (People’s Rule) at massive rally in the temple town of Tirupati on Tuesday as lakhs of his supporters cheered him on.

"It will be a democratic and secular party. It will be a people's party, born from the hearts of the people. It will be a party for backward classes, farmers, workers, women and youth," he said.

"The party will work for development, modernisation and industrial revolution. Its goal will be 'santosh' and 'ananda' (contentment and happiness) Andhra Pradesh," he told the gathering at the sprawling 120-acre Avilala Tank.

A POLITICAL STAR IS BORN: Actor Chiranjeevi announces the name of his party in Tirupati.

"I know your problems, pains and sufferings and will always stand by you," he said, while taking the oath in the name of Lord Venkateshwara to dedicate his life to serve the people.

"Today, we are sounding the bugle for a major battle against the social ills. There are no leaders in the battle but only servants. I am your servant. We will win this battle. No one can stop us."

Chiranjeevi unveiled the party flag—green and white with the sun in the middle—amidst rapturous applause from the gathering.

Broadly outlining the policies of his eagerly awaited party, he said that eliminating poverty, ensuring social equality, rooting out corruption, development of villages on par with urban areas, and providing health and education to all would top the agenda.

During the two-hour mega show, the 53-year-old actor said he favoured prohibition but added that his party would take a final decision only after detailed deliberations.

"After spending 30 years in the glamorous field, I could have lived a life for myself. I have all the comforts in life but I decided to be in your midst by responding to your appeal.

"I am overwhelmed by your support all these years. Now it is time for me to pay back and be in your midst to share your sufferings," he said.

Chiranjeevi, who announced his decision to join politics on August 17, took a swipe at the ruling Congress for selling government land to industries and for acquiring cultivable land for Special Economic Zones (SEZs).

"We have no rivals. Problems are our rivals. We have no rivals because we have no fear and greed. We have entered the battlefield but our battle is against problems. Courage and honesty are our two weapons. We have no leader. All are soldiers. I am also one among you," he said.

Timing the launch with the birth anniversary of Mother Teresa, he also unfurled his party’s flag —white on the top and green at the bottom and a sun with 24 rays in the centre.

Though not known as an orator, Chiranjeevi spoke for about two hours and outlined the policies and priorities of his party, coming down heavily on allotment of farm land for special economic zones (SEZs). “The government is supposed to be the trustee of public property. It should not acquire arable land from farmers and allot it to SEZs and industries,” he said. However, he clarified his party would not oppose industrialization per se.

The much-hyped political entry of the 56-year old Telugu film star is all set to reshuffle the state’s political equation. Though the newly born party is said to be against poaching of leaders from other parties, there has been migration of several key leaders from other parties like the Telugu Desam Party.

He spoke of his commitment to eradicate poverty, health and education for all and promised to bring in an egalitarian society by balancing reservation policy with an equally important treatment for the economically backward class. “We will identify this category as a new group called the EBCs,” Chiranjeevi said.

Evading any direct policy statement on issues like Maoists, separate statehood for Telangana and categorization of scheduled castes into groups, Chiranjeevi said, “A final decision would be taken only after thorough research and due consultation within the party”.

He said the Maoist problem was more related to poverty in rural areas. On Telangana too he was non committal: “The (Telangana) region is backward. We will try and fill the gap and still if people insist on separation, we will peacefully allow it.”

Chiranjeevi's Praja Rajyam, the new Mega political power of AP

Tirupati: Praja Rajyam (People''s Rule) is the name of the political party of the Telugu superstar-turned-politician Chiranjeevi.

The fans went berserk as Chiranjeevi delivers a powerful speech

The much-awaited name was unveiled by the star before a sea of humanity at Tirupati on Tuesday evening in filmi style.

Developing the suspense and anxiety of the audience comprising of hundreds of thousands of men, women and youths, Chiranjeevi said that the name was chosen because his party was born from the hearts and minds of the people.

"Who called me into politics. It was you people. What do you want? It should be rule by the people for the people," he said.

Without going into the details of the policies and programmes of his party, Chiranjeevi said it will be a secular, pro-poor party.

"It will be the part of backward and weaker sections, farmers, labours, and women. It will be party, which will fight for social justice which will take Andhra Pradesh towards economic development and prosperity and industrial development. It will make the state a Santosha Andhra Pradesh, Chirunavvulu Andhra Pradesh and Ananda Andhra Pradesh," he said.

He promised top priority to the farmers, universal access to good education and healthcare to all the people on the lines of developed countries.

"My dream is to provide high-quality healthcare of corporate sector hospitals to the people in districts," he said.

The wait was long, but worth it. The megastar and the annaya (brother) of Andhra Pradesh arrived at the Avilala Cheruvu in Tirupati at 5.30 pm amidst cheers and screams from all his fans who were waiting since morning.

Chiranjeevi, sporting a white shirt, walked up to the grandly-decked dais, waving at fans who could not stop screaming the moment they laid their eyes on the star.

Chiranjeevi began his speech by uttering the words and seeking the blessings of "Tirumala Tirupathi Venkatesha."

Chiranjeevi at Tirupati Rally

Chiranjeevi, who sounded emotional on seeing such a huge gathering, said, "These eyes of mine are blessed to be witnessing such a wonderful sight."

He also went on to say that he was here to serve the people and told the people that he understood the problems as he too came from a very humble background.

The crowd was beyond control and screamed "Jai Chiranjeeva" as he decended upon the temple town of Andhra Pradesh.

However, as he started speaking, the entire crowd went quiet and began listening to him patiently.

Flowers were showered on the mega star the moment he walked up to the dais and as he waved and greeted the crowd, the people danced and shouted as though there was no tomorrow.

The temple town had not seen so much activity in a long time. The town was probably reminded of the days of N T Rama Rao who launched his party in Tirupati in similar fashion.

The fans say that the crowd present is nearly 10 lakh. However, when one looks at the sea of humanity present at Tirupathi, you could say the crowd is as much as the eye can see.

The organisers had a tough time in controlling the crowd. The police had to resort to lathi charge on three occasions to keep the crowd under control.

Throughout the day, Chiranjeevi's movies such as Mutta Mesthri and Indra played on the giant screen as well as the 70 LCD monitors that have been set up at the venue.

A documentary on Chiranjeevi's achievements and also on his charitable activities were also shown. The people were also treated to a variety of cultural programmes, which mainly revolved around the life and achievements of the megastar, Chiranjeevi.

Praja Rajyam

Tirupati, August 26 : Twenty-Five years after legendary Telugu actor N T Rama Rao launched the Telugu Desam Party and altered the course of Andhra’s politics, megastar Chiranjeevi today launched his Praja Rajyam party that is all set to change the state’s politics once again. With Chiranjeevi expected to have a stronghold in coastal Andhra, both the Congress and TDP may find it difficult to gain power in the 2009 elections.

Starting on an emotional note, Chiranjeevi spoke for almost two hours, delivering a well-rehearsed monologue. “As per your wish and desire, I have entered politics. So the party is also named Praja Rajyam. It will be pro-poor and of the people and by the people,” said the actor.

It was after a suspenseful six months that Chiranjeevi finally announced the party’s name on Tuesday, and unveiled its green and white flag with a red sun in the middle. As the actor walked onto the stage, the crowd — about four lakh fans and followers — went into a frenzy, causing a stampede.

Four persons died — two were electrocuted and two trampled to death — as the eager fans broke barricades and rushed to the stage. At least 40 persons were injured, including The New Indian Express photographer Koteshwara Rao who slipped into the melee and was trampled on. However, he managed to pull himself to safety but not before injuring his back.

Over 200 mediapersons covering the event had a narrow escape when the barricade of the press enclosure also broke.

Unlike other party meetings, there were no other speakers. Chiranjeevi did not share the stage with anyone.

His thoughts on a variety of issues would endear him to the Left parties and the Opposition TDP. “Look at what successive governments have done to the poor man. Today, he has to be given subsidised rice at Rs 2 because he cannot afford the high prices,” he said.

Sticking to his pro-poor line, he slammed the Government policy on SEZs. “How can you take away land from the poor farmer and give it to the rich at subsidised rates? What kind of policy is this?” he asked.

The actor also touched on the Naxalite problem, blaming it on the successive governments’ oppression and poor policies. “It is a very sensitive issue and I will deal with it sensitively. Similarly, the Telangana issue is something that requires a study of the present situation on the ground. Like Telangana, coastal Andhra and Rayalseema are also facing problems,” he said.

Starry politics

Down South, where film stars are put o#n a pedestal equal to gods, ties between politics and cinema run deep. After their attempts to make it big at the box office, many an actor has turned politician with eyes on the ballot box. While many have joined parties, others have launched their own. Like their movies, some have proved hits, others dismal flops. A brief round-up:

M G Ramachandran: The first film actor to be chief minister, he launched the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK), after developing differences with the DMK. He came to power in 1977 and remained in office until 1987.

N T Rama Rao: Considered one of the greatest actors of Telugu cinema, he launched the Telugu Desam Party in 1982 after being asked by a fan, “Sir, we have treated you like god, but what have you done for us?” NTR became CM of Andhra thrice.

Sivaji Ganesan: One of India’s most versatile actors, he was at first a supporter of the DMK and later joined the Congress. In 1987 he left the Congress and in 1988 launched his own political party, the Tamizhaga Munnetra Munnani. After an unsuccessful stint, the party wound up in 1999.

Bhagyaraj: The actor-director floated the MGR Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam in 1989 which turned out to be a flop. He soon joined AIADMK.

R Sarath Kumar: After quitting the DMK and AIADMK, the actor launched his own party, Akila Indiya Samathuva Makkal Katchi or the All India Socialist People’s Party, in September 2007.

Others: T Rajendhar (Thangachi Munnetra Kazhagam), S S Rajendran (MGR-SSR Latchiya DMK), M Karthik (All India Parliamentary People’s Party), Vijayashanti (Talli Telengana Party), Devan (Kerala People’s Party). — Sharika C

Vijaykanth: Launched the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam in 2005, but he is the only candidate from his party to hold an Assembly seat. Has refused alliances with other parties.
